Now, a word about his frenectomy--although he was nursing well (he has gained 1 lb 3 oz since discharge), advice from doctors and nurses was that it is best to do this minor surgery as soon as possible, mainly to mitigate any speech problems in the future. This procedure is much less invasive than the circumcision he received, so we opted in. The pediatrician basically did the following:

  1. Orally administered some Children's Tylenol.

  2. Used 2 long cotton swabs to apply local anesthesia on either side of the frenulum.

  3. Clamped the frenulum with forceps for 60 seconds, so as to displace any blood in the frenulum. This reduces bleeding.

  4. Snipped the frenulum with some scissors that looked like what I used in elementary school.

The image below is pretty awesome. For everything they did, Liam would fuss a little bit at first, but then he'd just chill out and let them do their thing. He didn't like getting clamped with the forceps, but I kept talking to him and holding his arms and he stayed pretty calm. So calm, in fact, that for the entire 60 seconds he just lay there in repose, and Chelsie snapped off this shot:

Chelsie's Birthday Celebration

This is something I put together for Chelsie's birthday. Chelsie was actually born on 27 Sep, but with her mom in town for Liam's birth, we had a birthday dinner tonight before Corey has to leave.

For My Wife

This is a repost, but it bears repeating, just as "I love you" and "you have made me a happy man" bear repeating. I am no poet, so I am grateful that moving sonnets like this exist. Sappy? You bet.

Sonnet XVII - Pablo Neruda
(100 Love Sonnets, 1960)

I don't love you as if you were the salt-rose, topaz
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as certain dark things are loved,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesn't bloom and carries
hidden within itself the light of those flowers,
and thanks to your love, darkly in my body
lives the dense fragrance that rises from the earth.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I don't know any other way of loving

but this, in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep it is your eyes that close.
